The Composers Website

The Composers website, which appears to be of USA origin, lists quite a number of interesting opportunities for composers, some of which are about to expire, whilst others still have some time before the Deadline date. In particular, a site called 'Fifteen minutes of fame' organises a series of 'calls for scores' based on different solo instruments. Each opportunity ends up selecting several scores for the solo instrument in question. It is worth looking at the 'fifteen minutes of fame' and the other opportunities at composers site that are too many to list individually.

Sanders Society Young Composers Competition 2017

A biennial competition for young composers under the age of 30 years. It is an opportunity for young composers to write a choral work of up to 8 minutes for SATB. The last winner had their composition sung by Gloucester Cathedral Choir. The society remembers and promotes the music of Dr John Sanders, late Organist and Master of the Choristers at Gloucester Cathedral. For full details of the life and work of John Sanders, and for future announcements of the 2017 composition competition, please visit the website. Competitors should be aware that, since the competition was inaugurated in 2009, the judges have only awarded two prizes, with 2011 and 2015 entries judged to be of insufficient standard for a prize to be awarded. This raises an interesting question as to what 'standards' in choral composition means.

Hebrides Ensemble: Call for Scores

Would you like to hear your music performed by one of the UK’s leading chamber ensembles?
Would you like to discuss your music with internationally renowned composer Nigel Osborne? Then come and join us in Edinburgh on Tuesday 21 November 2017 for a day of music-making and discussion.
The event will be led by composer Nigel Osborne and Hebrides Ensemble’s Artistic Director William Conway. Scores will be played by Hebrides Ensemble musicians during a day of performance and discussion, open to anyone with an interest in composition.
Hebrides Ensemble supports composers at all stages of their careers, most recently through: workshops for those at school, college and university; training for amateur composers working on their own; commissions and performances for those entering the profession; and commissions, recordings and broadcasts for established composers internationally. If we don’t know you or your music, we can’t support you! So, this is a chance to let us see what you’re doing and for us to get to know your music.

Submissions should be:
• a maximum of 7 minutes long (this could be a section of a larger work)
• written for any combination of the following instruments: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Flute, Clarinet, Oboe and Bassoon and Horn. Solo or ensemble works will be considered.
• We don’t mind if your work has been performed before; if its published or unpublished; how old you are; or where you’re from. The only thing we ask is that you have completed your formal education.
Composers of any age and stage will be welcome to attend the seminar, even if you have not submitted a score. The seminar is open to all. For details on how to attend click here. Submissions must be received by 18:00 on 30 September 2017.

One copy of the score (and a recording if you have one) should be sent to:
Hebrides Ensemble

Our central aim is to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and inspiration through workshops and outreach with schools. We work together with heritage locations and archival institutions in delivering these projects, which positively impact children’s educational experiences by allowing them to explore and express their imaginations through collaborating with artists and working with project partners. We aim to reach young people from disadvantaged backgrounds (Pupil Premium Grant, PPG) and in areas of low cultural engagement, as well as school children on the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) register and children learning English as an Additional Language (EAL).

The project will centre around a specific heritage building or space in each location, and alongside Hand Of, you will work closely with local (and national) archives in order to explore stories from the building’s history.
Your music will act as a vehicle for these stories, and you will collaborate with the other artists and school children to deliver a performance which tells and explores the history of the building or space you will be working in/with.

The position will include:
- Writing and creating new piece of music (we are open to re-using and adapting existing works).
